The Importance of 5-Year Hydrostatic Testing for FDC Piping

Article by Stephanie Hayes – Inspections Contract Administrator

In a previous Oliver NewsBlog, we delved into the critical importance of the 5-year internal inspection/obstruction investigation. Now, let’s shift our focus to another 5-year requirement outlined in NFPA 25: the hydrostatic test of the fire department connection (FDC) piping.

As per NFPA 25 (2020 Edition, 13.8.5), the piping from the fire department connection to the fire department check valve must undergo a hydrostatic test at 150 psi (10 bar) for a duration of 2 hours, at least once every 5 years.

This meticulous test replicates the water pressure that would be exerted by a fire department’s pump truck during an emergency. Its primary objective is to pinpoint any weaknesses or defects that might compromise the delivery of an adequate water supply through the FDC in the event of a fire crisis.

Conducting this hydrostatic test is not just a regulatory obligation; it’s a crucial step in ensuring the reliability and effectiveness of your fire protection system. By subjecting the FDC piping to such rigorous testing, potential issues such as leaks, structural weaknesses, or obstructions can be identified and rectified proactively. This proactive approach significantly reduces the risk of system failures during a fire emergency, thereby safeguarding lives and property.

At Oliver Fire Protection & Security, we understand the paramount importance of this hydrostatic testing procedure. Our team of skilled professionals is well-equipped and experienced in performing these tests with precision and accuracy.
