9. Obstructed Fire Protection Equipment
Control valves, risers, inspectors’ test connections, Fire Pump Controllers, and Fire Department Connections must remain accessible.
Why it matters: Firefighters and maintenance personnel need immediate access during an emergency.
How to avoid it:
- Maintain a minimum three-foot clearance around fire protection equipment unless local requirements specify otherwise.
- Include accessibility checks during facility inspections.
- Educate employees not to store materials in front of fire protection equipment.
10. Failed Waterflow or Alarm Device Testing
Annual testing must verify that fire sprinkler system activation properly communicates with the fire alarm system.
Why it matters: If notification devices fail, occupants may not receive timely warning, and emergency responders may not be notified as intended.
How to avoid it:
- Perform all required inspection, testing, and maintenance at the prescribed intervals.
- Investigate trouble signals promptly.
- Repair failed devices immediately.
- Coordinate testing whenever modifications are made to the fire alarm or sprinkler system.
